Time’s ‘worst words’ list

Have any of you seen Time’s nominations for words that should be banned? As well as ‘feminist’ (!!), they’ve nominated a whole list of words that tend to be feminised, that tend to be used by youth, or which originate in the vernacular of communities of colour. Nice — by which of course I mean the opposite — demonstration of the politics of language.

In related news, I would love to have a discussion with the dev who made it so that I can’t insert a link in the WYSIWYG editor here using my tablet and instead required me to hand-code it. This is 2014!

  1. Over at Time today: “Editor’s Note: TIME apologizes for the execution of this poll; the word ‘feminist’ should not have been included in a list of words to ban. While we meant to invite debate about some ways the word was used this year, that nuance was lost, and we regret that its inclusion has become a distraction from the important debate over equality and justice. –Nancy Gibbs”

Let us note that the word is still in the poll and there’s no ‘added nuance’ to the blurb with its justification — i.e., words and not action — but at least they said something.

Actually, they apparently archived it. More over at The Mary Sue
