One of the most interesting aspects of Dawn that I’ve noticed so far is how similarly the relationship between the Oankali and the humans parallels the political, social, and economic relations in our own society and even throughout history among the more and less privileged (components of this including race, class, gender, etc). For my paper, I’m thinking of comparing and contrasting the Oankali and human relationship to different ones in our society both today and during the time of Dawn’s publication/Butler’s lifetime leading up to the book. For the close reading aspect, I’ve so far considered parts such as biological descriptions of the Oankali and specific diction used regarding the humans, but will probably add things/change my mind as I finish the book. I considered talking again about The Year of the Flood and how the things I’ve talked about relate to that novel too, but I’ll probably stick to just writing about Dawn because writing about two novels won’t give me the chance to really delve into specific detail without getting way too lengthy.
